2. Write about something you fixed.
I asked him to change the bulb in my headlights for me and he was all, “why don’t you come on outside and I’ll show you how to do that!”
But I didn’t want to go outside and learn how to do that. I wanted HIM to do that for me.
“This is stupid Bob!”
And he was all, “Don’t be silly. It’s easy enough.”
And I was all, “I don’t need to know this!”
And he was all, “Well what are you going to do next time your headlight goes out?”
And tears sprang to my eyes because that scar across his face filled the unspoken words between us.
He knew the cancer it left behind had a mind of its own.
“I’m taking it to you!” I said, “You can fix it every time!”
He ignored me. Popped the hood. Demanded my attention.
He was right. It really was easy.
I thanked him, but sort of hated him for making me confront what was broken.
He was not here the next time I needed my headlight changed.
I fixed it myself.
