3. Write about something you are looking forward to this month.
When I started having babies I was determined to take pictures of every moment of our lives together. I think this obsession with photos started because there is a serious lack of photos from my own childhood. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but growing up I always wished for more pictures of my Dad with us kids. I wanted to make sure that if me or Pat died an untimely death, our kids would have proof of our existence to cling to for the rest of their lives. The ever-evolving land of technology has only fueled this method of memory by making photos and videos so easy to create and share. Needless to say, I have thousands upon thousands of pictures in chronological order taking up space in my computer for any possible occasion.
I spoke to my mom about this picture taking obsessed society and she mentioned she doesn’t mind not having more pictures because they’re so sad. And in that one statement my perception has been completely altered. They ARE sad! I hate them. Baby Kainoa with his giant doe eyes and his too big piece of corn? Give him back!
Little Maile with her pigtails and her cookie? Give her to me!
Toddler Laina waving at strangers on the beach? Hand her over!
I love seeing those little babies, but my Mom is right…the pictures make me a little sad. I want to go back for a minute. I love them as teens and I love that they don’t need me 24 hours a day and that they don’t throw themselves to the ground when they’re frustrated, but…gimme those babies.
I shouldn’t have taken those pictures. If I didn’t have those pictures to remind me of how scrumptious they were then I could properly move on with my life. I do look forward to what lies ahead. Laina’s senior year of volleyball season has started and she’s living her best life at the top of the high school hierarchy. See, here’s a picture!:
And Maile has been practicing with her college volleyball team since the beginning of August. I SO look forward to twice the number of volleyball games this fall. See! Here’s a picture!
And Kainoa has started his freshman year of high school! I can’t believe he’s on his final leg of required academics. See, here’s a picture!:
I look forward to this next set of milestones and capturing as many of them on film as possible. I don’t think future me will mind! She won’t pine for my teenagers as much as I pine for past me’s toddlers right?
Now it’s your turn!

John Holton says
No matter how old they get, they’ll always be your babies. Mom told me that once.
Patty says
Photos definitely tear at your heartstrings but….those saved baby clothes?
I’ve already been warned by daughter #1 to NOT send them to her in Florida. I won’t even suggest that daughter #2 takes a bundle. And our son? Not sure if babies will be in his future but, if and when, there’s a huge bag of his former attire.
I refuse to tote any of them to Goodwill. Each little outfit, snowsuit, blanket….brings up memories and I can recall each of my children wearing the items.
Maybe John Holton summed it up best, remembering and holding onto those “baby moments”, regardless of how old our kids get.
