3. Tell us about a family vacation you took one summer.
I’ve been thinking I want to rent an RV. I found a site called Outdoorsy that is just like Homeaway or Airbnb, except instead of renting vacation properties, you can rent RVs and trailers. I don’t have a game plan yet and they’re a little spendy.
I mean you can find a rental for under $200, but if you go much lower than that little school buses start popping up and I have to draw the line somewhere.
My family will feel concerned about this idea because we rented an RV once when I was in 8th grade and traveled to California from Washington. Things did not go according to plan.
Chairs fell from the roof and we had to pull over on the freeway to retrieve them. Some kind of gas leaked into the back bedroom and I woozily complained about a headache and we were told to stay out of there.
The driver-side door would not stay shut and flapped open spontaneously as we cruised down the freeway. My stepdad Bob quickly remedied the problem with a bungee and a hook or wire cables that he probably had stashed in his suitcase. We were riding in a death trap, but instead of killing us, the RV keeled over and died on its own about halfway between Washington and California.
We squeezed into a tow truck so tightly that my mom silently sobbed at the weight of her huge kids crushing her and eventually we ended up in Disneyland. I believe we rented a van for the second half of that journey, but to be honest I have no memory of how we got home or what we actually did with the RV.
All that to say, I’m really feeling eager about providing a similar experience for my kids…minus the negative parts. Maybe we’ll find a campground a couple of hours away instead of traveling to another state. Just to be safe.
I think the kids would like it. What could possibly go wrong?

Come on, you know that being marooned halfway between Washington and Calfornia (Oregon?) was the best part of the trip…. I hope it pans out for you and that you do hit the road this summer (or what remains of it).

I’ll admit to watching “Going RV” now and then, always intrigued by those who are on the hunt for a mobile home, either for vacation purposes or….to live in, 24/7. There’s definitely (I think) much to save with not having to book motel rooms and eat at fast food places, if, your RV is well equipped to handle all the needs. But, the fuel costs, at this point in time? Dunno about that!
Still, it seems like fun. I hope you find exactly what you want!
