You’re too little.
You can’t stand up.
You sit waiting.
When we go skating.
You start off slow.
You hold me tight.
A new world you’re braving
When we go skating.
I see things click
You’re learning fast
You are amazing
When we go skating
You’re letting go
You ask for a push
You leave me fading
When we go skating
You don’t look back.
Your smile is big.
My heart breaking.
When we go skating.
Where’s my little girl?
She couldn’t stand up.
She sat waiting.
When we went skating.

I am all choked up this morning.
Jennifer says
Aw, that’s so sweet. And how brave are you getting on skates. I would totally break something if I tried that.
Mama Kat says
Shoooot girl…I kill it on the roller rink. They even have adult hip hop skate night. It’s like a club on skates…because that’s not dangerous.
Jennifer says
I would break a hip.

–>So cute. I’d be taken all of my pictures from the floor because it’s likely I’d be on my arse quite a bit.
BalancingMama (Julie) says
I love how you accompany the poem with photos. Too sweet. It’s hard to believe my girl will be that big one day, but I bet it’ll come sooner than expected. (SIGH).
Mama Kat says
It definitely doesn’t feel like it when you’ve got a bouncing baby on your lap…but I swear just yesterday that was MY bouncing baby.
Lindsay says
I am constantly found asking myself “Where did my baby girl go” every time my girls do something that seems too “grownup” for them. Letting go is hard Kat….Hard.

This is so simply said, but evokes such mamma nostalgia.
I really want to learn how to use the camera my daughter gave me so I can post like this. The pictures just made the post!
Love it

I would so love to go skating. We’re moving to New Jersey in a couple of months. There better be roller skating. . .just sayin.

Stop making me cry.
It makes me love you more, but I’d rather laugh and keep you at arms distance.
Actually I don’t mean that. Make me laugh, make me cry, remind me that my own babies are getting bigger each day…
stupid emotions. :|~
PamJ says
Great post. Skating is a great idea with the kids…
Why do they need to grow up so fast?
Jenny says
Awww this is so sweet.
I have major phobia of skating. The floor looks so much farther away when you get older ;)
Aunt Bethany says
My mom used to take me roller skating EVERY Saturday morning at 10:30 AM. She’d never skate, though…just sit on the sidelines, while reading a magazine or doing the budget. Thinking back on that now, I realize what a sacrifice that was for her. She gave up more than an hour of her Saturday morning to sit and watch little kids/teens skate circles around a roller rink. Instead of staying home to get things done, she always put me first. What a mom.
Thanks for bringing some memories back for me! Looking forward to posting my love sonnet to a stale cookie tomorrow in your workshop!

I haven’t been skating in years, but now I really want to go! This captures the bittersweet joy of raising kids. Our job is to get them ready to leave us :(
Polish Mama on the Prairie says
Awww, how sweet! My older loves skating as well. And she was like that also. I remember how proud she was to go by herself with her Godsister around for an entire song… Breaks my heart.

This was one of my favorite things to do as a kid. We just bought J her first pair of skates for Christmas. She’s been using them a lot. I guess our next step is the rink! :0)

So touching – loved it! I can’t help but wonder: I grew up learning how to ice skate, and still do. I wonder which one is easier for a kid to learn.
