5. A year in review! Compile a years worth of your best blog posts and pictures.
I love looking back at my year of blog posts and photos to find my favorites. I always get lost a bit on that jaunt down memory lane, but I’ve narrowed it down! Behold the best of 2015:
January:
I wrote a poem that revealed some of the struggle I was experiencing with my girl. It was a rough year, but she has come a long way.
February:
Laina and I talked about what we would change about our lives if we could change anything and her response was adorable.
March:
My ongoing hate relationship with door-to-door salesmen continued. I’m still convinced Jesus is sending them to my house as payback for the fact that I don’t go to church.
April:
I addressed the issue of name calling in our house and how it is not tolerated unless you’re talking to a wall.
May:
Laina turned ten! And I shared a little about where I think I went wrong as a high school English teacher.
June:
We dodged a Father’s Day gift travesty and I deeple regretted a family outing.
July:
Kainoa turned eight! And I shared my dogs dirty little habit.
August:
I shared the 10 things I’ve learned from reality housewives.
September:
I realized that my coping skill when it comes to stress might be directly related to why I don’t make more money.
October:
Maile turned twelve! And I recapped a lifetime history of my own Halloween costumes.
November:
I shared 5 things about me that you know nothing about, I’m knowledgeable about, I know nothing about and that I believe.
December:
Santa is coming! My favorite December post will always be our annual Santa pics.

You’ve accomplished so much this year! I really connected with your poem about your daughter. I’ve been dealing with a similar issue. I connected with your thoughts on being a high school English teacher too. I’ve switched down to 7th grade and have been enjoying the difference with the younger kids (but I miss teaching To Kill a Mockingbird). I loved the photos you included, too, especially the one of the kids running on the beach and the one with you and a flag. Happy New Year!

Thanks Marcy! Going through old posts and seeing how we struggled with quite a bit of anxiety with my girl was tough. She’s come a long way, but I did end up withdrawing her from school. I needed this year to bring her back to me. I’m curious if you read Go Set A Watchman and if it in affected your feelings of TKAM at all. I sort of refuse to read it. Happy New Year!!

I haven’t read it, but I heard a lot about it and was upset about what it might mean in terms of Atticus’s character. Here’s my take on it, though. Characters evolve in author’s minds, and the Atticus that Harper Lee published in TKAM is the Atticus that the author intended. I would like to read it eventually out of curiosity, but I don’t think they should have promoted it the way they did. It is interesting to make available to people, but maybe they could have published it in a scholarly way rather than market it as a sequel, which isn’t what it was written to be. It was more like an earlier draft that the author changed into TKAM, so TKAM is the “real” way to think about it. That’s as much sense as I can make without having read it yet. Ha ha, OK, now I will have to read it :) Best of luck to your and your family in 2016!

YES!!!! This is exactly how I feel about it! And, I honestly don’t believe that Harper Lee ever intended to have it published. Period. I remember watching a segment about her years ago where they talked about how she prefers to live quietly and was not in great health any longer and couldn’t fully understand any sort of contracts she might be asked to sign. I believe people (her lawyers? family?) forced this book and I’ve been boycotting it. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments that it should not have been marketed as a sequel. It should have been marketed as a first draft or not at all.
