I missed Maile’s 14th birthday post. Every year I write about how wonderful and weird and quirky my kids are. I love to go back to see what I wrote about them the previous year because I like to see how much of it remained the same. Maile was four when I started blogging and I’ve been giving her birthday shout outs ever since…except for last year I guess and almost this year.
My four-year-old is fifteen now. At four I wrote about how she was celebrating her birthday with brand new Barbie slippers, a star wand, and a purse. And at fifteen she was passing on a party and opting for a quiet family dinner.
Somewhere between 13 and 14 she flew past her father in height and now onto 15, I feel her gaining on me. That explains what she’s been busy doing during those afternoon naps. She traded in her star wand for high heels and went to her very first high school Homecoming dance this year.
She retired her Barbie slippers for volleyball shoes.
I had really hard time adjusting to a new life with my first baby. I was super anxious about trying to keep her from crying or being uncomfortable in any way. People told me not to worry, that the time would go by fast. I remember hearing that and feeling overwhelmed at the thought of the next 24 hours. How would this go by fast when I can’t even get this baby to sleep right NOW?
And now here we are, on the brink of driving and boyfriends and first jobs. It’s okay with me if the next few years go by more slowly than the first 15.
Happy 15th Birthday Maile!

She’s quite pretty, and looks a lot like you. Very tall, like you. I imagine Pat is ready to lock her in the basement until she turns 30. I certainly would.
