3. Why your winter break never works out the way you plan.
I wrote an entire blog post about why this winter break did not go totally according to plan because it has not been filled with fun activities everyday. Sometimes my kids are bored and/or sit on their electronics and video games all day long. Sometimes they even sleep into the afternoon. So my blog post was filled with reasons why things get in the way (money, work, household chores) and I cannot execute a more memorable winter break for them.
As I re-read what I wrote I was like, “well you took them to Enchant Seattle” and “what about spending your birthday in Leavenworth?” and we also took them to the movies and you know what? They had a fine winter break and I’m an idiot for spending even one second thinking it didn’t go “according to plan.” Who do I think I am? Walt Disney?
I put a stupid amount of pressure on myself to be a parent that supplies whatever I think I need to supply to keep smiles on my kids faces. The truth is, children are human and humans are not 100% pleasant or happy at all times and it usually has nothing to do with the fact that someone is not supplying them with a fun activity and everything to do with the fact that they are human. I don’t know where I got this notion that I need to worry or feel guilty if my kids are not properly entertained and happy.
I DID give them that Christmas light maze experience at Enchant Seattle, I DID give them Christmas, I DID take them to Leavenworth to celebrate my birthday and of course they do receive all of my unconditional love around the clock. They got to stay up late and sleep in and play video games. They watched a ridiculous amount of YouTube videos and Netflix and they ate lots of ice cream. I would say that even though I’m still in the throes of winter break with them (they do not go back to school until Monday), it has been perfectly FINE! Dare I say downright enjoyable!?:
So to answer the prompt, my winter break never works out the way I plan because I’m completely unrealistic. I am not a magical happiness superhero for other humans in this household and I need to learn to be fine with that. The other humans in this house need to learn to be their own magical happiness superheroes.
The Prompts:
1. Take a line from a song you love and turn it into the title of your next blog post. Let the content follow.
2. Describe a favorite Winter memory.
3. Why your winter break never works out the way you plan.
4. Write a blog post inspired by the word: chill
5. Tell us about the last time you went ice skating.
John Holton says
That picture of your daughter with the horse says it all: she’s sincerely happy to be there. Remember the old Yiddish saying, “man plans, God laughs.” You had a perfectly wonderful time just winging it, and I bet your kids will remember this one.
