3. Happy New Year! What resolutions are you making? How did last year’s resolutions turn out for you?
For someone who doesn’t believe in New Year Resolutions, I sure manage to write a blog post about them every January.
Last year’s resolutions were:
- Make more money so that taking a family trip to another state does not require years of saving up.
- Be consistent about limits I set on time my kids spend on their electronics and video games.
- Make my kids clean more.
- Sleep more
- Stop eating junk
- As much as I love working on the computer all day, I need to move. my. bodyyyyy.
That’s a good looking list right there. I do sleep fine though…not sure why that warranted a resolution last year. I feel like if you don’t have a child under the age of five in your care overnight then you really can’t complain about lack of sleep…just go to bed earlier bro.
I still eat junk, but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge problem. And I started going to the gym in June, so I think the goal to move a little more was a success! I wouldn’t say I enjoy it since I do still try to talk myself out of going, but at least I’m going somewhat consistently.
My goal to make more money last year was derailed because I stepped back from a job I was doing in order to help more with Harper when her seizures were completely out of control. I decided to help Pat with his eBay shop instead and have been loving the freedom it has brought with it as far as building my own working hours go.
That being said, the goal to become financially stable enough to just pick up and go on a vacation without saving up in 2019 is kind of laughable to me now because there wasn’t any saving happening at all in 2019. SAVING WHAT MONEY!? We’re fine. It’s fine. Everything is fine. But in 2020 I’d like to work on getting filthy rich, but I’ll settle with at least doubling on eBay what I was able to help Pat earn through his store.
My last two goals of 2019 were focused on reducing the time my kids spent on electronics and increasing the time they spend cleaning. This is a constant work in progress. All three of my kids are glued to their electronics. They will put them down if we have an activity to do, but I don’t always plan activities. Not to mention, the activities they prefer cost money and I think I covered that I don’t currently have a lot of extra of that floating around. Electronics are the solution to their boredom. Since Maile and Laina play volleyball year-round, I don’t worry about them quite as much. Kainoa’s mood is directly affected by his time playing video games and he’s not in a sport year-round, so he’s the one I battle with most about screen time. This battle will continue throughout 2020, I haven’t found a solution to this yet that leaves either of us super happy.
So now that I have analyzed last years successes and failures, what ARE my goals for this year?:
- Keep Harper from having any seizures at all in 2020. :)
- Keep working out. (Don’t you dare cancel that gym membership.)
- Double my earnings in Pat’s eBay shop.
- Pay off credit card debt.
- Foster 20 animals in 2020. (I fostered 18 in 2019!)
- At least two of those animals should be Greyhounds.
- Remodel my office space.
- Remodel the upstairs loft space.
- Remodel my bedroom.
- Remodel the kids “playroom.”
- Read 20 books in 2020. (I read 12 in 2019 so this is going to be a challenge).
I think that’s a good start for now! And here is a lovely video recapping how we spent our Christmas, my birthday, and New Year’s Eve this year:

Hey, I think you did great with last year’s goals, all thing considered! And your 2020 list is impressive/ daunting. Good luck!
I struggled with my kids and their electronics use too when they were younger. Oldest earns good money as a computer scientist now, for what that’s worth. And I have a friend who works for Direct TV who, basically, watches TV for a living. He says he does it to spite his dad who always harped, “Nobody’s gonna pay you to watch TV!” So there, Dad. Ya never know.

I’ve never been a parent, so I wouldn’t have the slightest idea how to do this, but maybe see if you can get Kainoa interested in reading?
Sounds like it’s a god year ahead for you. You have some big plans!

They say that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and, of course, one must be proactive in order to get on the more favorable road. I wish you much luck with all of your goals for this year, Kat. Somehow, I think that if anyone can accomplish a list like you’ve shared, it will be you.
Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family!
