5. Write about something you learned this week!
This is our fourth week home from school and quarantined from the world due to the Coronavirus. When I first wrote about the virus we were still a little uncertain about how it was going to be handled in Washington State. When we got word the kids’ schools were going to be canceled for a month I definitely started feeling a little anxious. During our second week home I shared that Harper’s mom was sick with the Coronavirus and the governor officially shut down all non-essential businesses. Last week I was lamenting over how different things are right now compared to a year ago and THIS week I learned that our school has now been canceled for the remainder of the year. Our kids will not go back.
I’m definitely sad for our kids and how this is impacting all of them. My kids are very lucky. None of them are at an age where they are missing a graduation and they are actually fine with not going back (so far). They are used to me working from home so it sort of just feels like a Saturday that never ends here. I see a lot of parents complaining about home schooling and this is not something I’m really stressing about. Since they’re older, all I need to do is remind them to log into their classes and double check that their work is being turned in. I’m not actually teaching anything, which would definitely be much more of a challenge.
I 100% support whatever needs to be done to save as many lives as possible. I cannot believe the havoc this virus has wreaked in such a short period of time. Less than a month ago there were not even 4,000 confirmed cases in the United States, currently there are over 430,000 confirmed cases. It’s mind-blowing. So if practicing social distance is what we need to do then I will be REALLY good at it.
For now, we’re hanging tight. I will continue to stare out the window for another week until I can share my next update.

It would indeed really suck if one of the kids missed graduation because of this. I really hope and pray that this thing turns the corner and wipes itself out sooner rather than later, but I’ll stay in the house until it does. Well, maybe not entirely: we might go out and take a ride, maybe go through a drive-thru and get some lunch or coffee and stay in the van and eat or drink, just to get me out of the house. It’s really nice out, too…

I’m hoping it turns a corner too…before next fall would be great so that at least the kids can attempt a normal year. Getting outside and breathing in some fresh air is nice! Even if it’s just for a little drive!

I feel bad for HS seniors, missing out on graduations, proms, spring activities… Definitely a year to remember. And yes, doesn’t it seem like we lived in a different world just a few short weeks ago!?

While my heart breaks for all the high school seniors who may miss out on celebrations, I think most of us would feel far worse if they became sick with this virus, regardless if its destructive effects are focused on the older generation.
And, I agree with Abby. One moment, the holidays were behind us and we anticipated all that would take place when Spring, and Summer came along. Now, we wait to get back to work, or some bit of normal, and slowly pick up all the pieces of life that this pandemic has stolen from everyone.
Stay safe, stay healthy!
