Despite the worldwide pandemic that is forcing all of us to stay home for nearly two months straight now, I still had the best Mother’s Day. Pat and I started the day off with an early morning drive to Vancouver, Washington to pick up a couch. I have been working remotely with my sister on sprucing up some rooms in my house that have been in desperate need for an update. We have a “loft” upstairs that at one point had a couch, but more recently has been a “catch-all” room for items I’m not sure what to do with. An old office desk, a shelf full of unwanted books, lamps, a few boxes of items for ebay, Kainoa’s old bed, etc.
Admittedly, I’m not great at decor, but I hate wasted space like that. So in addition to helping me update my playroom, my kitchen office, and my garage…I texted my sister a picture of the loft and enlisted her help there too. It’s the only room that I had an “idea” about. Ever since installing my Google Chromecast on the TV in there, I’ve been winding down in that space and I love it! I wanted to turn it into a rich, plushy, cushy, homey “Netflix and Chill” (like actually chill) room. I sent her this picture:
And while that couch costs in the neighborhood of $2K, she discovered a similar (but much more affordable) version:
Pat and I picked it up on Mother’s Day, my sister tossed a gorgeous throw rug into our car when we dropped off flowers for my Mom and we are well on our way to making my vision a reality. I will note that the new couch is the opposite of cushy and cozy. In fact, it is extremely uncomfortable to sit in…but it’s pretty? The room is nowhere near complete yet so I don’t have an updated picture to share quite yet. My sister has convinced me that we can still accomplish my goals with the stiff/pretty couch and I trust in the process because she is absolutely nailing it in the other rooms in the house so far. Maybe my family can just leave and let her quarantine here alone for the next month.
We spent our Mother’s Day evening picnicking at an open park. We got fresh air and ate and played volleyball on an empty field with no net and it was the best day ever!

My grandmother had furniture like that. Utterly God-awful stuff that hurt to sit on. Hard as a rock. She had gotten it from her son Ed; I guess it had been in his swingin’ bachelor pad, and when he got married, his wife told him it had to go. Come to think of it, he might have had it at his place by design, to discourage people from staying too long.
A belated Happy Mother’s Day! I’m happy that you and yours got out. I think everyone’s getting antsy to get out and get life back to normal. I’m afraid that when all is said and done we’ll discover it was all a hoax, but right now we can’t call it that.

Uncomfortable or not, I think you will find a way to make it work. In the long haul, it will probably hold up much better than furniture you just “sink into”, never to arise again, without help. There’s a downside to everything, it seems. I love the color and can’t wait to see the finished design!
Have to admit, John’s “hoax” comment got my attention. Great topic for a blog post, once we’re all through this!
Stay safe!

Well, happy belated Mother’s Day, Kat! Glad you made the most of it!
As for the couch, it’s not about comfort, but about looks! It looks marvelous! Do you rent your sister out? I’ve got a home office…

Happy belated Mother’s Day! I’m loving the couch. It’s too bad it’s not more comfortable, but maybe it will get more comfortable once you’re able to break it in just a bit. At least you know it’s well made and should hold its shape for a while! You could also get some comfy throw cushions/large throw pillows to make the seat softer, at least, and those could be easily changed out, tossed on the floor for extra seating, or just to zhush it up a bit if you want to.

You live in Washington state, right? What’s the response to your Governor up there? You ready to be force tested before being allowed to grocery shop?
Mama Kat says
Yes, we’re in Washington State. I’m pretty happy with how our governor is moving us through each phase…though I’m not sure how effective it will be ultimately without a vaccine to fight this. I do almost all of my grocery shopping online and pick up at the store. They haven’t said anything about force testing, but I think I read something about etablishments taking our temperatures at the door? I suppose that fine if they think it will help, but it feels like a false sense of security. People can carry illness before ever exhibiting a fever.
