3. List 6 things you hope to accomplish this Fall.
I am biting at the bit for life to get back to normal. We missed our Club volleyball season, we’re missing our Fall high school volleyball season, we’re missing school and I don’t even know if my kids sleep anymore.
As I was getting caught up with Kainoa’s school email account earlier this week, I caught an email he sent to his teacher requesting an excused absence. He told his teacher he had stayed up until 3am the evening before and was just too tired to make it to his 2pm class.
I was surprised to read this considering Kainoa knows I check his email and that I would never permit him to stay up until 3am on a school night and that I would never permit him to miss a class because he chose to stay up. Not to mention school does not start until 9am and all he has to do is roll over and turn his computer on. They don’t even show their faces in their zoom calls. Needless to say, his teacher was not having it and Kainoa’s phone has been removed from his room at night so I do think he’s sleeping now BUT what I’m getting at is that my kids are totally out of whack. And I have lost complete control.
But I refuse to lose control of our Fall traditions and I am determined to make things as normal as possible. Here are the 6 things I hope to accomplish this season!:
1. Decorate my Front Porch
I used to be a lot better about infusing fall decor and colors into our home when the kids were younger. Since we’re spending so much time at home I might as well make it look adorable here!
2. Visit A Pumpkin Patch
We have visited a pumpkin patch every year since the kids were young and it has become less of a priority now that they’re very busy teenagers. This year, I will make sure to get those pumpkin patch pictures and fill our bellies with kettle corn.
3. Drink Coffee with Plenty of Rain and Fog Outside
I love rainy days more than anything and just sort of put up with the beautiful sunny days. I miss the fog and gloom and cannot wait to enjoy my morning cup of coffee with it this fall.
4. Autumn Staycation
I would love to squeeze in a staycation that requires a long drive through all the colors of an Autumn colored forest.
5. Caramel Apples!
The fair has been canceled, but why not make our own? In fact, homemade caramel apples remind me of those rare, very special Fall evening when my mom would pop them in the oven. Let’s make that magic happen this fall!
6. Make a Full Thanksgiving Dinner
I have no idea what Thanksgiving is going to look like this year. Typically, we would all go to my Mom’s house and celebrate Thanksgiving together, but at this point I can’t imagine that will be a possibility. It will be too cold to do any sort of outdoor tables 6 feet apart situation. If we must stay home, I will make Thanksgiving dinner all by myself for my own family for the first time ever. And it will be amazing!

You put your caramel apples in the oven? We used to melt the caramels (which was a real pain, because you had to unwrap all of them), put a stick in the apple, dunk it into the caramel, then roll them in nuts and set them on waxed paper until they cooled off. (We were usually lazy and bought them premade from Affy Tapple: no muss, no fuss, no mess.) I’ve seen the caramel wrappers, which would have taken hours off the process…
I’m glad you like rainy, foggy days. I think you get a lot of them out your way.
I’m sure that your Thanksgiving dinner will be spectacular!

A whole thanksgiving meal sounds like a great idea! There are short cuts: like just cooking just turkey breast in a slow cooker instead of the oven. Or even a nice Roasting Hen, for a change of pace that fits completely in a slow cooker. If not the meat in a slow cooker, there’s any number of mashed potato recipes for the slow cooker as well.
My favorite thanksgiving side is to cut and slice fresh sweet potatoes into strips & saute in a skillet with garlic & salt & pepper till tender. Heathy and tasty. I often slice frozen brussel sprouts in half, saute same way and combine that two, but—only if you like brussels. Frozen are younger & more tender.
Does your family have a favorite desert? Anything Hawaiian for Thanksgiving? (spam? ha, ha)

Are you okay?

So many of the yearly seasonal traditions we’ve always taken for granted will definitely be different this year. And, I hope and pray that next year will have some element of a return to what once was “normal”.
As far as Thanksgiving, you got this, Kat! Sit back and enjoy the wonderful aromas in your kitchen and, maybe, with luck, the weather will be foggy on turkey day…after dinner, relax and enjoy that cup of coffee!
