2. Write about a favorite Christmas gift you received as a kid.
It’s hard to nail down the best gift ever since in my lifetime I’ve experienced so many wonderful Christmases.
1. The White Cat
There is the white kitten my Mom got me so that I would finally stop begging for it. It ended up giving birth to kittens later on and since I loved the kittens so much my mom agreed to let me keep one of I found the mother a new home. SO I DID. Talk about least loyal pet owner ever. I found my beloved white cat a home, kept the kitten, but since it was having accidents in the house my mom made me give it away too. I surround myself with cats now as a form of therapy.
2. The Black Lab
My step-dad dropped a tiny black lab into my lap when he came home from a hunting trip one year. I can only compare the sheer joy and shock I felt at seeing the dark bundle tumble out of his zipped up jacket to the birth of my firstborn child. Overjoyed to tears in the midst of my hormonal teenage phase.
3. The Family Figurine
I purchased myself a small figurine of a husband, wife and small baby for our first Christmas after Maile was born, but since I wasn’t working at the time I felt guilty and returned it. On Christmas Day, my Grandma (who was known for some odd gift-giving) had the exact figurine wrapped in a gift bag for me without knowing anything about the one I had taken back to the store.
4. My Burned Blanket
My sister spent hours upon hours crocheting a gorgeous blanket one Christmas. Every evening she would be watching TV in a recliner near our fireplace and row by row made progress on that blanket. Until one day I was all, “your blanket’s on fire”. It wasn’t actually on fire, but it had been scorched pretty badly and we both stared at each other in disbelief that she had spent so much time on that blanket for nothing. But it wasn’t for nothing. I was the lucky recipient of the scorched blanket and proud owner of it still.
5. My Brother’s Hair
My older brother had a very special gift for me one year and I unwrapped it to find a ponytail of hair. His hair. I had encouraged him to cut it all of for Locks Of Love, so he did…and I still have it.
6. A New Fake Diamond Ring
When Kainoa was 7 he purchased a wonderful gift for me from the school’s Santa Shop and insisted I open it early. The year before he had gifted me a gorgeous bejeweled compact and I wasn’t sure he could outdo himself, but when I opened my package and discovered a heart shaped diamond ring I just knew I was raising him right.
There really are too many thoughtful gifts to list. My sister managed to turn the first year of my blog into a hardcover book. My grandma gave me $1000 when I was in high school and it was the most money I had ever seen in my life. I bought a pair of doc martens with it and who knows where the rest went. My Mom gave me an empty journal that I fill with poetry and began my lifelong love for writing my feelings.
Pat gave me a travel magazine and was like “Pick a place and plan a trip for us!” I never did that because we couldn’t afford it and had small children at the time, but it was a wonderful thought. Come to think of it, his gift didn’t come with an expiration…maybe it’s not too late to cash in on that trip! Bora Bora here we come!!

Speaking of white cats, has Isis remembered that she lives at your house? I remember you said she was moving down the street…
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Kat!

I had to capture Isis because she wouldn’t come near the house anymore. My neighbor texted me when she was in the yard and I brought over a can of food and then stuffed her into a cat crate. We released her in Maile’s room and she was a little feral? She actually hissed at us and she’s normally really docile. After a couple of days she got used to sleeping on a bed again and roams the house with the other animals have turned in for the evening. She definitely wants back out and goes to the door when we open it, but I’m thinking I’ll just keep her trapped inside for now. She seems to be doing just fine! Merry Christmas to you!

Ohhhh….than ring from Kainoa! I looked at the photo and remembered a “diamond” necklace our son purchased for me at school one Christmas. I still have it…ran to the drawer where I’ve kept it, for years now!
When any son buys his Mom a bejeweled anything…we definitely have done a terrific Mom-job!
Merry Christmas, Kat….to you and your beautiful family!

Merry Christmas to you! I have to agree, I must be doing something right if he’s bestowing diamond rings upon my finger!
