2. Write about a favorite Winter memory.
The best way to spend winter, in my opinion, is to watch it happen outside your window from the comfort of a warm home. Don’t get me wrong, it’s quite possibly my favorite season, but I don’t necessarily want to be IN it. I love the gloom. I love the storms. I love the one-off snowy days. I love it all and it’s a good thing because in Washington State mother nature brings the gloom in full force and I know it can cause people to slip into a more depressed state of mind.
If anything I find summer to be a lot more depressing. It’s not the sunshine so much as it is the heat that forces me into shorts and tank tops. I have to face head-on the pounds that were packed on all winter and well…flappy arms and chunky thighs can send me into a spiral. So I hate summer.
Even though winter is best viewed from a window (so is summer) I have to say our family has created some wonderful snowy day memories. When the kids were smaller we used to pack them up and just drive to the mountain for a snow day. We would pull off on the side of the road and make a sledding hill for the kids and it really was the most fun. I nearly broke a tailbone on one of those hills, but it was worth it.
A couple of years ago we continued the tradition by spending my winter birthday in Leavenworth. It was a picture-perfect snowy getaway. In fact, I wrote about the pressure I put on myself to make their winter breaks as memorable as possible by planning adventures like that for them.
I had come to the realization that I didn’t NEED to hold myself accountable for their boredom. Here we are on Day 276 of quarantine, I guess the world felt that life lesson needed reinforcing? Because I can promise they’ve been bored and I haven’t been able to do a thing about it. It may be time to take them to a socially distanced snowy mountain top for old time’s sake.

Mary hates summer for about the same reason you do. With her it’s that she can’t stand the heat. She says she hibernates when the hot weather comes.
You know, you’re probably better off outside through all the Covid stuff. So yes, hit the mountains and enjoy yourself.
