2. What were you writing about last year at this time? What has changed?
At this time last year, we had not yet been affected by Covid on a national level. We were not shut down and life at my house was running smoothly. The girls were playing volleyball, Kainoa was working on a family artifact project and Pat was participating in a health challenge at his Crossfit gym. My time was divided between helping Pat with his eBay shop, taking care of Harper and my kids, and doing all of the social media things that I like to do.
One year later, everything and nothing has changed. I don’t take care of Harper anymore and my kids stopped all extracurricular activities, but I somehow still get swindled into pulling Kainoa’s school projects together for him. Pat failed his health challenge and hasn’t stepped into his CrossFit gym since last March. I still help him with eBay and that little shop is probably the only thing that has really benefited from Covid. During the first shutdown here in Washington State, online sales for us grew a ton. I think we will continue to see growth there as people have become more comfortable ordering online.
I did actually mention taking a break from social media and was contemplating how active I wanted to remain on Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, etc… I think something really took hold there because it’s been about 10 months since I posted my last YouTube video. Looks like that little break turned into something more like a retirement. I didn’t plan to do that, but it just feels frivolous to post about my daily life, recipes and family outings when our country has been in upheaval. No idea if I’ll start posting regularly on those platforms again.
I had no idea a year ago that things were going to change so drastically and that it would last for as long as it has. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everyone who would like the vaccines will have access to them soon. I would love to see people living life again without fear of coming in contact with others. And I would love to see those still suffering from the long-term effects of Covid recover entirely. I feel hopeful that a return to “normal” life is on the horizon. Next year when I look back at this post I want to feel like “I was right! Everything bounced back!!”

Kat,
I’m with you, I’m ready to see people back to normal life again free of fear and worry over Covid. Honestly, I think this is with us forever just like the flu and yet society isn’t freaking out over the flu season. Why is that? I think it’s because everyone under estimates the danger of it but continue on their way like any other day. I think Covid shouldn’t be treated any different than the flu if you ask me. If people used common sense then we wouldn’t see these influx of cold/flu or Covid cases. It’s simple folks. Stay. Away. From. People. What I mean by this is, maintain a social distancing practice at all time in public during the height of the season. Unfortunately people don’t know what that means. They will climb over top of you no matter what’s going around. Visible symptoms of sickness can be seen on a person and yet that doesn’t stop people from walking within inches of Grim Reaper (may as well be). What about people’s lack of hygiene? Forget washing the hands, practically no one does it in public and have you noticed what people do with their phones, then they place those germ infested devices to their faces? Oh good heavens, the madness is enough to make me pull my hair out. I’m ranting I know. Okay…I’ll stop. Here’s to things getting back to the way it’s supposed to be. Thanks for hosting the writing workshop, my dear!
