4. Write a blog post inspired by the word: Begin.
When I was younger I promised my Mom that I would begin a new tradition where I would bring platters of McDonald’s cheeseburgers to Thanksgiving dinner so that I wouldn’t be forced to eat turkey ever again.
She shuddered and was all, “Okay Kathy. If that’s what you think.”
I told her that when I grew up, I would own 100 dogs and 100 cats and that I would keep them in my basement, and when she came over for a visit, I would let them all out.
She shuddered and was all, “Okay Kathy. We’ll see.”
I told her that when I had kids, I would always explain to them why they had to do something and not ever say, “because I said so.” I told her if she had just talked things out with me, I would have understood and probably listened to her logic.
She actually, physically laughed out loud at that one.
Now that I’m older I’m rolling my eyes at my threats and theories.
While I love the idea of owning 200 pets for the sole purpose of upsetting my Mom on the off chance she happens to stop by for a visit, I see now that the maintenance and cleanup involved between visits is not really worth the reward of her discomfort. I think back then I was upset that she wouldn’t let me keep more kittens. I think fostering a litter every now and again sufficiently meets that need. No need to adopt 200 pets and really who can afford that anyway?
But that idea of a burger-filled platter on Thanksgiving Day? I stand behind that. I don’t think it’s too late for me to begin that tradition.

Kat,
Looking back, we’ve all said foolish things. I smiled at all of your threats to owe hundreds of pets and burgers for Thanksgiving but like your mother, I had to laugh at your refusal to not use the words, “Because I said so!” There’s no better way to start the morning than with a good laugh. :D Thinking about your desire to serve McDonald Cheeseburgers for Thanksgiving really isn’t a bad idea, except why not make your own? They’ll be way better and really your Thanksgiving meal is what you make of it. Oh sure, I’m a traditionalist for the holidays but that first Thanksgiving the Pilgrims and Indians celebrated they didn’t have what I call a traditional Thanksgiving menu. I don’t even think they had turkey but I do remember from history lessons they had deer meat and fish which makes sense as that was plentiful no doubt or maybe just easier to come by. Who knows but whatever your “Thanksgiving” meal consists of as long as you don’t forget to give your thanks for the blessings in your life then as far as I’m concerned, a McDonald’s cheeseburger or bowl of cereal works for me. :) Thanks for hosting another week of creative writing fun. Have a terrific day, my dear!

I think you’re right, a plate of homemade cheeseburgers would be delish! I think when I made the threat I was only thinking of how easy it would be to grab a bag of wrapped cheeseburgers rather than slave away at a stove. I was wise beyond my years. ;)

Burgers for Thanksgiving works for me. Even better: would be Chick-Fil-A.
Mom hated cats, so she came for one visit and that was it.
