1. Write about a meal you never looked forward to eating when you were growing up.
Rice pudding.
There was nothing about that creamy, rice-y, raisin-y concoction that I enjoyed. Not the rice. Not the pudding. Not the raisin. Not nothing.
me: Mom what’s for dinner tonight?
mom: It’s 9am Kathy. I’m not thinking about dinner.
me: Will you just not cook rice pudding though?
mom: Out!
So I’d leave the kitchen until later.
me: Mom what’s for dinner?
mom: Don’t ask!
me: But it’s starting to smell like…rice…pudding…
mom: Kathy? You will eat what I cook for you! It’s not up for discussion!
me: Will you just not cook rice pudding though?
mom: Out!!
My opinion was not respected. It was part of the price I paid when I became one of six kids. Mother became impatient with our daily dinner inquiries and she was bound to disappoint someone since the only thing all six of us ever agreen on was pizza. I was all too often kicked out of the kitchen for what I considered preventative care.
mom: Dinnnnerrr!!!
me: Yay! I’m so hungry! What are we having!?!
mom: Rice pudding.
me: Nooooo!!!!
The silver lining of being a mom now is that I’ve never had to eat rice pudding again. Although my kids might have a thing or two to say about my chili.

John Holton says
My mom had a similar aversion to creamed corn. We never had to eat it because she hated it. I’ve never had rice pudding, either, but it always seemed more than a little gross.
