5. You won an award at some point in your life, what was it for?
When I was in seventh grade I earned an award at an assembly in front of the entire school.
It was about time really. What sort of hero did I need to be to finally receive the recognition I deserved?
I was ready for the spotlight, “We would like to present our next award to Kathy Bouska for…”
For what?
For being adorable?
For being hilarious?
For being the school sweetheart?
Was I going to be awarded for managing to pass my classes by the skin of my teeth without studying for a single test?
Was I finally going to be recognized for finishing my hot lunch pizza slice before anyone else?
“this award goes to Kathy for mastering something many adults struggle with to this day!…”
Work/Family life balance?
Boiling a perfect egg?
Staying sober?
“Kathy, why don’t you come on up here and collect this, she’s been on time to school every day this year folks! She hasn’t been tardy for a single day!!”
Being on time?
I received an award for being on time?
That wasn’t my award, THAT WAS MY MOTHER’S AWARD.
My sixth-grade teacher rushed over to congratulate me afterward, “When they called your name I just couldn’t believe it! Kathy Bouska? MY Kathy Bouska?? You were late nearly every day last year, way to go!!”
I was late every day last year?
MY MOTHER WAS LATE EVERY DAY LAST YEAR! And in her defense, she was basically herding cats every morning. Between me, my siblings and our cousins who we carpooled with, it was a miracle we even showed up half the time.
I wish I could say my life as an award-winning punctual human had just begun, but I think it started and ended right there in 7th grade. I’m sad to say that I am like most average adults in that I definitely struggle with timeliness. And work/family life balance. And boiling the perfect egg. And staying sober.
But it was a good run.
Now it’s your turn!

I think I won an award for pefect attendance one year. It came with free White Sox tickets…
