5. Write about something you are looking forward to.
We are quickly approaching our annual Vegas volleyball tournament. Since Maile graduated, Laina is our last high school volleyball player and therefore this will be our last Vegas volleyball tournament. To that I say, praise Jesus. We have been paying for our family to travel to this damn tournament for too many years. One year, we went twice because the girls were on two different teams and the age groups traveled at different times. It’s not the most ideal spot for a family trip. The first year we went Kainoa’s eyes about popped out of his head at the girls dressed in sequins and feathers offering to take pictures with him. He agreed it was inappropriate and mentioned he would go back when he’s sixteen and better prepared for these young ladies.
This trip will be a little different because it will be just me and Laina. When I took Maile on my own a couple of years ago, she took the reigns and I basically followed her all over town, she navigated the tram, she found the Starbucks and she walked 5 feet ahead of me to and from the volleyball courts. Maile is a firstborn smarty pants perfectionist so I just let her take charge. Laina is more like me…let someone else do all the work and follow along. Then blame them if they get us lost. I’m lucky if I’m able to find my way out of a Target and bonus points if I remember where I parked.
The other day I looked at Laina and was like, “You ready for our girls trip bestie!?” Maile piped in, “is it just the two of you??” and I was all, “I’m just glad I’ll have you there Laina because I know you’ll be a great leader!” And then we both started laughing because this is going to be the blind leading the blind.
We’ll be fine and I am looking forward to our little trip. I’m especially looking forward to this being the last one so that we can start planning family vacations that do not revolve around volleyball tournaments. It has been years since we visited family in Hawaii and I blame sports for putting us in the poor house until now. Do I hear the islands beckoning us next year!? Or is that just college tuition calling my name?

You must be happy that Kainoa hasn’t gotten into any sports…

What fun!
I’m guessing that I’m lucky with my oldest daughter, we’re very much alike when wanderlust hits and enjoy our own organized traveling and shopping chaos. Not so much with daughter #2 where it’s more like “get what we need and get moving!”. Still, time spent with either is precious.
Enjoy your trip, please stay safe!!
