2. Tell us about a time you broke curfew…what were you up to?
When I was fifteen my curfew was midnight. If something awesome was happening past midnight, I would ask for permission to spend the night at a friend’s house who had a later curfew. The inevitable problem I was bound to run into is that my mom would tell me I could not spend the night at my friend’s house and I would have to go home while everyone else stayed out and had the time of their lives.
About 90% of the time when my Mom said no to overnighters based on a hunch that I was up to no good, she was correct. I would complain and cajole and convince her to change her mind and once in awhile was successful at getting her to change her mind. One particular summer night, however, she was sticking to her guns and I was going to a party. As far as she knew I was watching movies with friends, but I was going to a party.
The party was actually really close to my house but I was having fun and midnight just snuck up out of nowhere. I should have gone home, it was fun but it wasn’t life-changing fun and I wasn’t drunk but my friend had been drinking and she needed to drive me home. I didn’t want her to drive so I drove her car, but it wouldn’t have done much good to drive to my house and let her drive all the way home so I drove to her house and then was stuck there.
I guess I just came waltzing in the next morning hoping for the best. I can’t believe our poor parents had to deal with kids missing curfews without the luxury of tracking apps and instant access to kids. I suppose they just lay awake all night and listened to distant sirens. Sounds miserable.
I had to tell my mom I fell asleep watching movies because she didn’t know I was at a party. She didn’t know my friends were drinking. And she most certainly would not have been thrilled by the idea of me driving home without a license. I wound up getting grounded with a curfew of 10pm for the rest of summer break. Seems a little harsh for falling asleep during a movie!!

Well, you did the right thing by not letting your friend drive, even being fifteen. It seems that, from our individual perspectives growing up, we always managed to justify breaking some rule. A learning process at best.

You did the right thing, but yeah, that’s pretty harsh punishment. Probably a good thing you didn’t tell them the truth or you might still be grounded…

Ooh, so much trouble for you, young lady!
“I suppose they just lay awake all night and listened to distant sirens.” – my mom mentioned her doing that sometimes, and I was all, aw c’mon. But then later, it was my turn.
