With less than three weeks left of summer vacation, I am squeezing in as much fun as I can before back to school season hits. One of the things I struggle with most when my kids are home from school is that I need to work from home, but also somehow keep them active (off of electronics). I don’t sign them up for camps because quite frankly, they’re expensive and my kids don’t like them. I enrolled Kainoa in a basketball camp and he said he felt like he was being punished.
I mentioned I’ve been taking the kids to local spots like ice cream shops and kitty cafes because they force us to get out of the house, disconnect, and enjoy something together that is not too expensive. I’m all about local fun and staycations if we can swing it! Even just a day trip to the lake with packed lunches can be exactly what we need.
I’m partnering with Frito-Lay Variety Packs and was thrilled about the opportunity because I honestly keep Frito-Lay Variety Packs on hand all year long. Not only for a day trip at the lake, but also for an easy road trip snack, volleyball
tournaments, back to school lunches, and most recently, our staycation in Port Ludlow. My sister-in-law was gracious enough to allow us to use her family cabin recently and we packed up the kids, dogs, and our Frito Lay Variety Pack and made a run for it!
We spent the weekend exploring all of the state parks, beaches, and family fun that Northwestern part of Washington State has to offer. We scouted Flaggler State Park for a possible future camping excursion and saw so many deer!
We bopped in and out of shops in Port Townsend. The bookstore was calling my name while the kids were drawn to a candy shop. Not to be overlooked, Pat found an olive tasting store. There really is something for everyone.
We revisited Fort Worden and crossed paddle boarding off of Maile’s summer bucket list. She only fell in once!
I’m not going to lie, cutting my little gamer off from his favorite video games was a challenge…both for Kainoa AND for me. As it turns out, he complains a lot when he doesn’t have access to video games and I would prefer not to listen to him complain, so I found myself missing his video games too. It really reiterated to me how important it is to continue to disconnect so that a day trip or a weekend away does not warrant such a dramatic response.
And it turns, out I am not alone. In a recent poll by Frito Lay Variety Packs, they found that over half of parents try to get their kids outside and away from their devices: 55% try to make their kids go outside as much as possible during the summer, while 54% actively regulate their kids’ screen time during summer break.
Altogether, it really was exactly what we needed and my love affair with staycations is here to stay. I love exploring parts of my own state that I have never been to! Bonus, that it does not cost us our life savings and an entire day of travel and that Frito Lay Variety Packs makes the perfect bag of snacks to make it easy to pick up and go.
Successful summer staycation! CHECK!
Now…can I sneak in an ocean trip before school starts?? I will not give up on my mission to keep these kids (and myself) active. Three cheers for family time!
