5. Write a blog post inspired by the word: Freedom
I remember one of my first tastes of freedom…it happened while riding with my newly licensed sister. She was 16, I was 14 and the music was blasting on the radio of the station wagon she was permitted to drive. She hated that car and named it Bernice…an ugly name fit to match the ugly car, but I didn’t care. That car represented FREEDOM.
My sister would drive with one hand on the wheel and her left leg perched upon the dashboard.
She was so cool, she didn’t even NEED both hands and legs to work that car. Driving was easy. One day I would grow up to drive that same car the exact same way with my own little sister in the passenger seat.
No parents, no rules…this was real freedom!
I twisted the cap off my Snapple lemonade and I raised that bottle to my lips…take a swig of that fresh tasting freedom, but my sister punched the brakes and that freedom lemonade came swooshing in all over my face.
I wiped my face and glanced up to see what it was she was braking for, but when the road was clear I went for another sip.
Again the brakes were punched and this time lemonade spilled right down my shirt. I turned to see my sister giggling at the mess she was causing ON PURPOSE and it was then that I realized true freedom wasn’t going to come for a couple more years.
Freedom is not sitting in the passenger seat of your older sister’s station wagon…freedom is BEING the older sister in the station wagon.
One day I would grow up to drive that same car the exact same way with my own little sister in the passenger seat….and I would punch the brakes and force her spill all over her own damn self too.
Ahhhh….freedom.
