4. Write a blog post inspired by the word: baseball.
My sixth grade teacher Miss G. was funny and easy-going. She’d say “sshh” throughout the day to keep us kids in line even when absolutely nobody was talking. When I was in seventh grade I got an award for perfect attendance halfway through the year and she tracked me down and high-fived me, “I couldn’t BELIEVE they called YOUR name for perfect attendance…were you on time even once last year in my class?”
I didn’t realize I had received a bad rep for attendance in her class, but if I was late to school it was because my brother couldn’t find his shoes and my mother hit every light on the drive over. Unless it happened to be a morning where my shoes were the ones missing, in which case…my bad.
One day we had a contest in class. Miss G. announced she would award two winners with tickets to a baseball game and she would personally chauffeur.
Now, I’ve never been much of a scholar, but have you ever been in The Zone? Where everything you do just falls into place perfectly and nothing can derail you? I entered The Zone. I wanted one of the tickets to that baseball game and I wanted John Brittenham to have the other ticket.
If we both went to the baseball game, we might sit close enough for our legs to touch and he might fall in love with me.
And you know what?
I WON THE CONTEST!!
I never win anything! Especially if any kind of puzzle or learning or quizzing or thinking is involved, but I won this one!
And you know who else won?
JOHN BRITTENHAM!
I’ll be damned if I wasn’t the luckiest girl in the whole world. This was fate. This was my time to shine. This was what it felt like to be a WINNER!
But I think Miss G. and John might have been feeling a little like…well maybe John’s best friend Brian might have been better suited to go.
Miss G. tenderly approached me and now looking back I believe she was really dreading the conversation she started about how of course she DEFINITELY wanted me to go to the baseball game with her. And she was so glad I won and I did a great job with the contest…but you know, would I maybe want to forfeit my ticket for a different prize so that Brian could go?
I felt a little bad about insisting I keep my baseball ticket. After all…I didn’t even like baseball. I didn’t have the attention span for it. I didn’t know any of the players. I was not interested in the game in the SLIGHTEST…but…John Brittenham.
I kept my ticket.
True to her word Miss G. transported John and I to the game with her. I was feeling a bit shy on our date and about halfway through the game I thought perhaps Brian would have been a better choice after all.
I have no idea who won the game and my leg never once brushed up against John’s.

John Holton says
Baseball can seem dull if you don’t know what you’re looking at. But then you weren’t looking at the game, were you?
