2. Tell us about something that makes you sick.
I was beginning to think I had superior immunity. Okay that’s a lie, I DID think I had superior immunity. I have been bragging to my family about my ultra rock solid superhero immunity for at least two years now because I have managed to dodge covid all this time. I didn’t get sick when both of my girls got covid last year. I didn’t get sick after any of our travel volleyball trips. I didn’t get sick from garage sales or from hanging out with my girlfriends. Superior immunity was the only way I could explain it! Until…it happened.
I missed Writer’s Workshop a couple of weeks ago because I was too busy being humbled by this stupid virus. It got me. Around 3pm on a Monday my throat started feeling scratchy. When Pat got home from work he said, “It’s weird, around 3pm today my throat started feeling scratchy.”
That was my first red flag. Why did we BOTH have sudden scratchy throats at 3pm? And then around 8pm that same day I was like, “Is it really cold because I’m shivering…” And Pat was like “No it’s not cold at all.” That was my second red flag. By 10pm I had locked myself in my bedroom and crawled into bed wearing a full sweatsuit. The next morning I had a full blown fever, cough, congestion and tested positive. I spent the next five days dumping vitamins into my body, eating soup and cough drops and rotating through all kinds of medications to treat symptoms. I was miserable. Pat also tested positive, but his symptoms ended up being so minor compared to mine that even he wouldn’t approach our bedroom and risk being near me. He isolated in his office and slept on a recliner for six nights and then we were fine! Well…it took me a couple of days to regain my energy, but the fever and congestion that was making me so miserable were gone.
I consider myself pretty lucky that my experience with covid was short and nonfatal, but my 2 year long bragging streak is over. Which leaves just one ultimate superimmune hero in our family who has managed to avoid covid despite every member of his family testing positive at one point or another, and that is KAINOA.
We could all learn a thing or two from these gamers who sit in their bedrooms during their free time playing video games. Minimal exposure, Maximum fun and super immune!

The bright side is that you probably won’t get it again. Glad you feel a whole lot better. I guess now everyone else is going to be playing video games….
Mama Kat says
Yes, I think just sticking with video games is probably the best answer. I am sort of glad to get the damn thing over with!
Abby says
Yuck, I’m glad you’re on the other side of it. Keep the drive alive, Kainoa!
I’d thought my whole family had super genetic immunity since we’d all dodged it. Then wham, we all had it around the same time. And we don’t even live together!
On the bright side, whenever I have a “stupid” moment, I blame it on Long Covid.
Patty says
Sorry that you went through this, Kat, but glad it passed and you’re on the mend.
Oddly enough, patients who see the Holistic Practitioner I work work once each month came in for their appointments and most had symptoms like yours. The at-home Covid tests most took all came up negative and further scans by the Practitioner indicated nothing more than the yearly flu being present. One or two did have more Covid-related symptoms and those patients recently went for another “booster” shot.
Now, on the news today, Pfizer is in the forefront over the lack of vax testing. Kind of made me feel validated for ranting over this on my website.
Again, glad you’re feeling better!
