Kainoa has been working on a farm for the past week. He works with a youth crew and they have been weeding fields every morning from 7am to 12pm. He’s hot and exhausted and moody when I pick him up and I don’t blame him. I read recently that it’s important for men especially to have responsibilities that are not mundane. Accomplishing difficult tasks or taking on something important makes them feel worthwhile.
On the flip side, when they spend their days sleeping or playing video games they can begin to feel worthless and that might lead to a bit of depression if they are unable to find something rewarding in those tasks. Kainoa is the last kid I could imagine signing up for a job with manual labor, and he might still get his fill of it (it is summer vacation afterall) but when I asked him if he wanted to quit yet he said, “no, I like that it gets me up in the morning instead of sleeping all day.” And I had my aha! moment…so it is true that men (maybe all people) thrive when they have bigger responsibilities. I’m proud of him for stepping out of his comfort zone to take this on.
The other day I was telling Pat that I noticed some weeds in my garden, but I couldn’t be sure if they were weeds because they were kind of pretty. Pat was like, “oh those are definitely weeds” and I was like “well they’re pretty!” And then Kainoa chimed in, “yeah, they’re pretty until they wrap around the roots of your plants and slowly strangle them to death.” My son. Dropping garden knowledge. I like who this kid is becoming! I’m not necessarily excited about seeing him behind the wheel of a car, but we’ll get there.

Good for Kainoa!! Isn’t it a great feeling when they surprise you like this, Kat?
He’d have a blast at my house, gardening-wise; I transplanted what my family calls “weeds” but are something called Mullein, just to see what this biennial would do. (Google it, very interesting).
So far, it’s about 6′ tall with tiny yellow flowers coming out of it. It won’t last long, being a biennial, it’s days are numbered, but its seeds likely have scattered and I’ll be seeing them around our property.
Happy Birthday to Kainoa!!

Happy birthday to Kainoa! Sounds like the job is making some noticeable changes in his life. That’s an important point you make about needing something to make him feel that he’s doing something of value. Boys need that even more so than girls.

Happy birthday to Kainoa! Great that he’s found something to get him up and out each day, that notion is good and healthy for all of us.
