1. Tell us about a time you got in trouble for something
It was not uncommon for my Mom to kick us out of the house. Kids are annoying. Kids are messy. Kids need exercise. Get outside and go play!
She kicked me, my little brother and my little sister outside to “go play” and I’ll be honest, we weren’t excited about it.
Why do parents think kids have SO many things that can occupy their time outside? It’s boring.
So we kicked an empty tin can down the street with our hands in our pockets and tried to come up with something to do.
We walked around the block, we knocked on our cousins door, our cousins weren’t home, we walked some more.
And then we decided to go to Mrs. Maddox’s house because she’s the sweetest old lady and she gives us candy.
And that’s what she did. She also showed us her garden and bragged about her giant boysenberries. They really were giant. And delicious.
We heard our older brother and sisters calling for us, but mostly just ignored them because boysenberries.
When we finally decided to leave Mrs. Maddox’s house my older brother was all, “Where WERE you!?! You are SO busted!!”
And then we got home and my Mom was all, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!?!
And we were all, “You told us to go play.”
And she was all, “We’ve been SCOURING the neighborhood for you!”
And we were all, “WE WERE PLAYING!”
And she as all, “Didn’t you hear us calling for you!?!”
And we were all, “Yeah…but boysenberries.”
And then we were grounded.
GROUNDED!
Maybe when you tell your kids to “go play outside” you should also specify to “please come back home eventually.”
Serves her right.
Grounded.
The audacity.

She didn’t give you a time to be home? Then it wasn’t your fault. I think you should get a retroactive apology.
Abby says
Yes, I recall the irony of “Go play outside! (somewhere)”, and “why weren’t you at home?!”
If I’m on that jury, you’re innocent.
